Decorative Chalkboard Welcome Plate feature image on kitchen counter

I found this buffalo check charger plate at Dollar Tree and thought it would make a cute Chalkboard Welcome Plate sign for my kitchen counter.

Buffalo check is everywhere this season and last season for that matter and that’s because it’s such a versatile pattern for fall and winter. If you’ve been looking for a quick and easy Fall craft, this one takes about 20 minutes –plus drying time for the paint!

The charger plate used for this craft is melamine. It’s lightweight and won’t break like glass if knocked off its stand.

I also used chalk paint so I could change the message and I just love the personalized look.

The chalk paint I bought was a spray paint but Dollar Tree sells a paint-on version too. I had to scuff up the first dry layer but more about that in the how-tos below.

Supplies

  • A melamine plate/charger (mine is from Dollar Tree)
  • Chalkboard spray paint or chalkboard paint
  • Painters tape
  • Fine grit sandpaper
  • Fall decoration picks
  • Chalk (or a chalk marker)
  • Hot glue gun

Spray Paint Twice

Spray paint with chalkboard spray paint once and let dry completely.

When dry use sandpaper to rough up the surface. This step is very important! I didn’t do this the first time around and my chalk actually etched through and scratched up the chalkboard surface.
