This DIY Patriotic Firecracker Windsock is easy to make with a few simple supplies –all plastic– so the windsock won’t get ruined if you hang it outside in the rain.
The base is a dollar store laundry basket and I was able to make three windsocks from one basket!
I’ll jump right in and show you how to make this easy patriotic craft.

- A 16 oz. water bottle

- X-Acto Knife
How To Make A DIY Patriotic Windsock – 5 Easy Steps
STEP 1: Cut Up A Laundry Basket
Cut out the center part of a round dollar store laundry basket as shown below.
STEP 2: Cut Three Equal Pieces
Cut the center part of the basket into 3 equal pieces. Then form them into round cylinders and use two zip ties to secure the ends as shown below. NOTE: I was able to make three firecracker windsocks from one laundry basket.
STEP 3: Cut Plastic Tablecloths into Strips
Cut the plastic tablecloths into 18-inch long strips that are about 1 inch wide. Tip: It’s easier to cut if you keep the tablecloth folded.
STEP 4: Assemble
Fold the top plastic tines inward then use clear scotch tape to tape multiple tablecloth strips in alternating colors onto each bottom rung of the windsock. Each of the strips here contains 4-5 plastic layers.

STEP 5: Add A Top
Cut the top off of a water bottle as shown below. Poke a small hole in the top of the cap with pointed scissors and screw the cap back on.
Use clear tape to tape the water bottle top onto the top of the firecracker windsock. The plastic tines should be on the outside. This will make a sturdy base to hang the windsock. Then pull the string through the bottle cap and hang up your windsock!
Update: My windsocks held up well way past the 4th of July and they look so fun dancing in the wind on my porch!
