This easy apple crisp is a simple, family-sized dessert made with fresh apples and a buttery oat topping. It’s perfect for fall baking, or anytime you have a surplus of apples. Serve warm on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Tips for Making the Best Apple Crisp
- Choosing the apples. Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for balanced flavor. I like about one-third Granny Smith for structure and the rest Fuji or Gala for sweetness. Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or McIntosh also work well.
- Slice the apples thinly. Thin slices help the apples cook evenly and become tender.
- Bake until bubbly. The filling should bubble around the edges. If the apples aren’t tender when tested with a fork, bake an additional 5–10 minutes.
- Cover while baking. Loosely tent with foil to prevent the topping from over-browning or drying out.
- Serve warm. Apple crisp is delicious on its own, but even better with whipped topping or vanilla ice cream.
